The Grand Wagoneer’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Suburban doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Suburban doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Grand Wagoneer has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Suburban doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Jeep Grand Wagoneer achieved a “Acceptable” rating - the second highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The Chevrolet Suburban has not been tested.

The Grand Wagoneer’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Suburban doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Grand Wagoneer and the Suburban have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Jeep Grand Wagoneer is safer than the Chevrolet Suburban:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Jeep Grand Wagoneer is safer than the Chevrolet Suburban:

Warranty

The Grand Wagoneer’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Suburban’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance on the Grand Wagoneer for 5 years and unlimited miles. Jeep will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Chevrolet only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Suburban.

Reliability

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the engines in the Grand Wagoneer have an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of some of the engines in the Suburban.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Grand Wagoneer has a 230-amp alternator. The Suburban’s standard 220-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Grand Wagoneer has a 830-amp battery. The Suburban only offers a standard 730-amp battery.

Engine

The Grand Wagoneer’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder produces 65 more horsepower (420 vs. 355) and 85 lbs.-ft. more torque (468 vs. 383) than the Suburban’s standard 5.3 V8. The Grand Wagoneer’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder produces 8 lbs.-ft. more torque (468 vs. 460) than the Suburban’s optional 6.2 V8. The Grand Wagoneer’s optional 3.6 DOHC V6 hybrid produces 227 more horsepower (647 vs. 420) and 160 lbs.-ft. more torque (620 vs. 460) than the Suburban’s optional 6.2 V8.

As tested in Motor Trend the Jeep Grand Wagoneer turbo 6 cyl. is faster than the Chevrolet Suburban 5.3 V8:

Regenerative brakes improve the Grand Wagoneer REEV’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Suburban doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer uses regular unleaded gasoline (mid-grade octane recommended with the 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder engine for maximum performance). The Suburban with the 6.2 V8 engine requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost on average about 35.1 cents more per gallon.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Grand Wagoneer’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the Suburban:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Grand Wagoneer has larger standard tires than the Suburban (275/55R20 vs. 265/65R18).

Suspension and Handling

The Grand Wagoneer has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Grand Wagoneer flat and controlled during cornering. The Suburban’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

The Grand Wagoneer has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Suburban doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

The Grand Wagoneer 4x4 handles at .75 G’s, while the Suburban High Country 4WD pulls only .53 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Grand Wagoneer 4x4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.8 seconds quicker than the Suburban Z71 4WD (28.1 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 30.9 seconds @ .5 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Grand Wagoneer’s turning circle is 1.3 feet tighter than the Suburban’s (40.2 feet vs. 41.5 feet). The Grand Wagoneer’s turning circle is 4.5 feet tighter than the Suburban 4WD w/24 inch wheels’ (40.2 feet vs. 44.7 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Grand Wagoneer has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Suburban (8.4 vs. 8 inches), allowing the Grand Wagoneer to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Grand Wagoneer Air Suspension’s minimum ground clearance is .1 inch higher than on the Suburban Z71 Air Ride (10.1 vs. 10 inches).

Chassis

The Grand Wagoneer is 10.2 inches shorter than the Suburban, making the Grand Wagoneer easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Grand Wagoneer uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Suburban doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Grand Wagoneer has 8.4 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Suburban (179.2 vs. 170.8).

The Grand Wagoneer has 2 inches more front hip room, .5 inches more front shoulder room, 1.1 inches more rear headroom, .7 inches more rear legroom, 1.7 inches more rear hip room, .6 inches more rear shoulder room, .8 inches more third row headroom, 2.2 inches more third row hip room and 1.6 inches more third row shoulder room than the Suburban.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Grand Wagoneer’s middle and third row seats recline. The Suburban’s third row seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Grand Wagoneer easier. The Grand Wagoneer’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 34 inches, while the Suburban’s liftover is 37 inches.

Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the Chevrolet Suburban is limited to 8200 pounds. The Grand Wagoneer 4x4 offers up to a 10,000 lbs. towing capacity.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system optional at extra cost in the Suburban, the Grand Wagoneer Summit has a passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, foot pedal distance, outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Grand Wagoneer Summit’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches. The Suburban’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the Grand Wagoneer has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Suburban doesn’t offer cornering lights.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Grand Wagoneer to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Suburban doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Grand Wagoneer has standard front air conditioned seats and the Grand Wagoneer Summit offers them optionally in the second row. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Suburban doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Grand Wagoneer has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Suburban.

The Grand Wagoneer Summit has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Suburban.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the driver’s visor. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Chevrolet charges extra for Homelink® on the Suburban and isn’t available on the Suburban LS.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Jeep Grandeer has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the Suburban LT/RST/Z71/Premier/High Country offers wireless charging.
