The Grand Wagoneer’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The CX-90 doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The Grand Wagoneer has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The CX-90 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Jeep Grand Wagoneer achieved a “Acceptable” rating - the second highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The Mazda CX-90 has not been tested.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer offers an optional 360-degree camera and it also offers an optional rear camera washer to make backing always safe, regardless of road dirt or grime, while the Mazda CX-90 doesn’t offer a camera washer, requiring manual cleaning.

Both the Grand Wagoneer and the CX-90 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer weighs 487 to 1329 pounds more than the Mazda CX-90. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Jeep Grand Wagoneer is safer than the Mazda CX-90:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Jeep Grand Wagoneer is safer than the Mazda CX-90:

Warranty

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance on the Grand Wagoneer for 5 years and unlimited miles. Jeep will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Mazda doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the CX-90.

There are over 4 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Mazda dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Grand Wagoneer’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than Mazda vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Jeep above average in initial quality. With 39 more problems per 100 vehicles, Mazda is rated below average.

Fuel Economy and Range

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer uses regular unleaded gasoline (mid-grade octane recommended with the 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder engine for maximum performance). The CX-90 PHEV requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost on average about 35.1 cents more per gallon.

The Grand Wagoneer has 8 gallons more fuel capacity than the CX-90’s standard fuel tank (26.5 vs. 18.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Grand Wagoneer has 6.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the CX-90 Turbo S’ standard fuel tank (26.5 vs. 19.6 gallons).

The Grand Wagoneer has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The CX-90 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Grand Wagoneer’s brake rotors are larger than those on the CX-90:

The Grand Wagoneer’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the CX-90 are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Grand Wagoneer has larger standard tires than the CX-90 (275/55R20 vs. 265/55R19). The Grand Wagoneer’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the CX-90 (285/45R22 vs. 275/45R21).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Grand Wagoneer offers optional 22-inch wheels. The CX-90’s largest wheels are only 21-inches.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Mazda CX-90 only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Grand Wagoneer has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The CX-90 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Grand Wagoneer has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the CX-90; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Suspension and Handling

The Grand Wagoneer offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The CX-90’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Grand Wagoneer offers an optional automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Grand Wagoneer’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The CX-90 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Grand Wagoneer is 1.4 inches wider in the front and 1 inch wider in the rear than on the CX-90.

For greater off-road capability the Grand Wagoneer has a greater minimum ground clearance than the CX-90 (8.4 vs. 8 inches), allowing the Grand Wagoneer to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Grand Wagoneer Air Suspension’s minimum ground clearance is 2 inches higher than on the CX-90 PHEV Premium/Turbo S (10.1 vs. 8.1 inches).

Chassis

The front grille of the Grand Wagoneer uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The CX-90 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Grand Wagoneer uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The CX-90 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the Grand Wagoneer 4x4 is quieter than the CX-90 Premium Plus (67 vs. 68 dB).

Passenger Space

The Grand Wagoneer has 37.6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the CX-90 (179.2 vs. 141.6).

The Grand Wagoneer has 1.6 inches more front headroom, 7.3 inches more front hip room, 8.9 inches more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear headroom, 3.3 inches more rear legroom, 7.5 inches more rear hip room, 7.1 inches more rear shoulder room, 2.1 inches more third row headroom, 6.2 inches more third row legroom, 7.9 inches more third row hip room and 11.1 inches more third row shoulder room than the CX-90.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Grand Wagoneer’s middle and third row seats recline. The CX-90’s third row seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Grand Wagoneer’s cargo area provides more volume than the CX-90.

Pressing a button automatically lowers the Grand Wagoneer’s optional second row seats and pressing a button automatically lowers or raises the third row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The CX-90 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

A standard locking glovebox and optional locking center console (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Grand Wagoneer. The CX-90 doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Towing

The Grand Wagoneer’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the CX-90’s (6030 vs. 3500 pounds). Maximum trailer towing in the Mazda CX-90 is only 5000 pounds. The Grand Wagoneer 4x4 offers up to a 10,000 lbs. towing capacity.

The Grand Wagoneer Quadra-Trac II can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Grand Wagoneer can be unhitched and driven around locally. The CX-90 can’t be towed flat on the ground.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the CX-90 Preferred/Premium, the Grand Wagoneer Summit has a passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, foot pedal distance, outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Grand Wagoneer’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The CX-90 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Grand Wagoneer’s standard Keyless Enter-N-Go allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the cargo door, and start the vehicle, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Advanced Keyless Entry and Start standard on the CX-90 doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear door.

The Grand Wagoneer’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The CX-90’s power window (except driver window) switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The Grand Wagoneer has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel is only available on the CX-90 Preferred/Premium.

The Grand Wagoneer Summit has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the CX-90.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the driver’s visor. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Homelink® is only available on the CX-90 Premium.

Compared to traditional radio, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer’s standard SiriusXM satellite radio provides an unmatched listening experience. Its extensive coverage guarantees consistent, crystal-clear reception across the continental U.S., and access to over 100 channels dedicated to a multitude of genres, including music, news, sports, talk shows, and comedy, many with only limited commercial breaks. Satellite radio is only offered on the CX-90 Premium.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Jeep Grandeer has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the CX-90 Preferred/Premium offers wireless charging.

The Grand Wagoneer’s optional ParkSense Automated Parking can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling the transmission and speed with the brake pedal. With its available fully controlled system, the driver just activates it and it parks autonomously, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The CX-90 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Model Availability

The Grand Wagoneer is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The CX-90 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
